What a Stealth Hammock Camping Trip Taught Me About Water Purification in the Outdoors

If you spend enough time hiking, camping, fishing, foraging, or exploring back roads, sooner or later you will run into the same problem.
Water.
More specifically, finding safe drinking water when your supply starts running low.
That happened to me recently during a stealth hammock camping trip.
I had spent most of the day exploring logging roads on my Wallke ebike, stopping to forage, scout campsites, and enjoy some quiet time in the woods. As the afternoon wore on, I noticed my water supply was getting lower than I had planned.

Eventually, I came across a tiny stream crossing beneath a road through a culvert.
Calling it a stream might be generous.
On one side of the road, the water was barely an inch deep. On the other side, it had pooled into a shallow basin only a few inches deep.
Most people would walk right past it.
Honestly, I probably would have too.
However, I had recently purchased a Grayl GeoPress water purifier and wanted to see what it could do in a real-world situation.

Many people use the terms water filter and water purifier interchangeably.
However, there is an important difference.
Most backpacking filters are designed to remove bacteria and protozoa.
A water purifier goes a step further by addressing viruses as well.
For many backcountry adventures in North America, bacteria and protozoa are the primary concern. However, broader protection can become valuable when traveling, filtering water from unknown sources, or preparing for emergencies.
That extra level of protection is one reason many outdoor enthusiasts choose a purifier over a traditional filter.
Why I Chose the Grayl GeoPress
When researching water purification options, I kept running into the same challenge.
Many systems worked well, yet they required extra hoses, gravity bags, pumps, squeeze pouches, or multiple components.

My One Criticism

If I have one complaint, it is the amount of force required to press the purifier.
Personally, I do not mind.
Most of the time, I brace it against my knee, a picnic table, a tailgate, or the ground and use my body weight.
For me, the process takes only a few seconds.
However, smaller individuals or anyone with limited upper body strength may find it more challenging, especially as the cartridge ages.
Even so, that is not a deal breaker for me.
Is It Worth It?
After using the Grayl GeoPress in the field, I understand why it has developed such a loyal following among hikers, campers, travelers, overlanders, and outdoor enthusiasts.
First, it is simple to use.
Just as importantly, it works quickly.
Beyond that, it consistently produces great-tasting water.
Most importantly, it inspires confidence.
There is something reassuring about being able to walk up to a questionable water source, fill a bottle, press down for a few seconds, and immediately have clean drinking water.
Rather than dealing with hoses, pumps, or complicated setups, you simply collect water, press the purifier, and drink.
As a result, the entire process feels effortless.

After testing the GeoPress in real-world conditions, including filtering water from a shallow roadside runoff pool during a hammock camping trip, it has earned a permanent place in my outdoor kit.
